In 2015, I made one of the most life-changing decisions ever—I left behind the familiar comforts of the UK and set off for to travel around Southeast Asia and Australia. I’ve always had a deep love for travel—discovering hidden streets, tasting new flavours, and immersing myself in cultures so different from my own. Little did I know that single choice would open the door to a life of adventure, countless stamps on my passport, and experiences I never dreamed possible.

“I enjoyed my travels so much that I was left wondering, ‘How could I continue my adventure when the money had run out?’ It was then that I discovered the world of TEFL teaching!”

After 3months in Bali, volunteering with a company that teaches English in schools to the local children, and completing the online TEFL certificate, I set off for South Africa to begin my internship.

Africa was a big eye-opener. The disparity between rich and poor is still ever present and teaching the children from the townships was a humbling and rewarding experience. Here I also got to go on Safari and spend some time in Tanzania helping in a home for rescued street children.

From there I was onto South America, working in a University in Chile. This proved a fantastic springboard for exploring Machu Picchu, Peru and the Atacama Desert.

For my next challenge i decided to try something completely new: teaching in Guangzhou, China, with English 1. English 1 didn’t just give me a job; it gave me a lifestyle that fuels my curiosity and passion for exploration.

Why I chose this path

And that was only the beginning. After China, my next chapter led me to Jakarta, Indonesia—a vibrant, bustling city surrounded by some of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Bali, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Singapore, Thailand... the list goes on. Every weekend feels like an opportunity for a new adventure.

So far, I have been lucky enough to explore the ‘last paradise’ of Raja Ampat, snorkelling in the rich marine life and climbing the limestone kharsts for views that are out of this world! I have been jungle trekking in Sumatra and Kalimantan, coming a little too close for comfort with one wild orangutan and discovering how they build their nests. Pulau Seribu (the thousand islands) is on our doorstep in Jakarta and offer a taste of Island life just a short ferry ride away. I’ve also explored the amazing Temples in Yogyakarta and climbed a volcano at sunrise in Mount Batur. Next year I’m hoping to take a cruise to see the Komodo dragons!

Working in English1 you are provided with all the support for planning and executing your lessons. Each centre has a vibrant team of staff working together to provide the best fun-filled opportunities for children to improve their skills in speaking, reading and writing in English. They also provide ample opportunity for professional development should you decide to make this your career long-term.

Life abroad: More than just a job

One of the biggest perks of working with English 1 is the freedom to truly live abroad, not just visit. My apartment in Jakarta? Fully furnished, with resort-style amenities and a view that never gets old. On weekends, I’m either lounging by the pool or catching a flight to a new destination.

Travel has become a part of my lifestyle, not just a holiday. Whether it’s exploring rice terraces in Ubud, riding a scooter through Lombok, or sipping coffee in a street-side café in Bandung, every experience deepens my love for the world and reminds me why I chose this path.

Work life and balance

Teaching with English 1 gives me the perfect balance. My schedule allows for slow mornings, exciting afternoons in the classroom, and plenty of time to plan spontaneous trips. I love connecting with my students, seeing their confidence grow, and then finishing the week with an adventure—sometimes as simple as exploring a new neighbourhood, other times as big as hopping on a plane for a weekend escape.

Final thoughts

If there’s one thing I’ve learned since 2018, it’s this: life begins when you step out of your comfort zone. Teaching with English 1 gave me the freedom to live, work, and travel in ways I never imagined. I’ve met amazing people, eaten incredible food, and created memories that will stay with me forever.
