Learning Basic Mandarin: How It Changed My China Experience

Many new teachers come to China hoping to learn Mandarin. Others simply don’t try because they believe it’s too difficult. Many more, I’ve found, start learning Chinese but give up, finding it too challenging, too time-consuming, too confusing, or for whatever other excuse. During my first six months in China, I kept putting off learning Mandarin for the same reasons. However, once I truly committed to studying and pushed myself to learn, my entire experience in China improved dramatically.

Where to begin

I began learning Mandarin by taking classes at English 1 Headquarters in Shanghai. These classes were free and offered by a fellow English 1 employee. My classmates were other teachers in the city who were just as busy as I was, but for one hour once a week, we dedicated our time to attending class and practising our Mandarin together. Week by week, I slowly started to understand more of what was happening around me. Whether I was ordering a drink (冰的!), speaking to my students’ parents, using public transport, or answering a phone call, I began to comprehend more of what was said to me and respond with basic words and sentences. By making this simple effort, I already felt more comfortable and confident living in China.

Real-world problem solving

Another indispensable skill I gained while learning basic Mandarin was the ability to solve problems using the native language around me. I know for a fact that it is entirely possible to get by in Shanghai speaking only English—I did it for six months. However, once I began learning the basics and using the language regularly, I could not only solve problems on my own but also help my friends in tricky situations. Ever been in a taxi where the driver isn’t quite sure how to get to your apartment? Being able to explain it in Mandarin really helps. Or have you ever left your belongings on public transport and needed to call someone to retrieve them? Speaking Mandarin is often the only way to get them back!

The Teacher Becomes The Student

Above all else, one moment that truly transformed me while learning basic Mandarin was when I finally became aware of what my students must feel like in the classroom. After taking beginner classes at HQ, I enrolled in more intensive lessons with a private tutor to improve my skills. These classes were much more challenging. That’s when I became even more confused—sometimes feeling completely lost—and I got a sinking feeling in my stomach: this is how my students must feel. For the first time, I truly understood their experience, and ever since then, I believe I have become a more understanding, patient, and creative teacher, ensuring my students can follow and understand me better.

Enhancing your China experience

Learning Chinese while living in Shanghai may not be essential for survival, but it certainly transformed my entire experience for the better. Mastering the basics of Mandarin has helped me gain a deeper cultural understanding and become more compassionate to the needs of my students. As I continue learning, I hope to further improve both my language skills and professional growth. I encourage you to take the leap of faith and learn Mandarin! 加油!
