The City of Charm
Yantai is bordered by both the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea, across from South Korea and Japan. With its downtown positioned between the sea and mountains and close proximity to other countries, teachers enjoy Yantai for swimming at the beach, hiking mountain trails, wine-tasting, shopping or taking ferries to other countries.
Yantai means “smoke platform,” giving a glimpse into the city’s naval history. Watchtowers constructed in the Ming Dynasty, which served to raise alarms against invasions of Japanese pirates, can still be visited today.
Currently the city is known as the cradle of wine production in China, housing the largest wine production base in Asia. The country’s largest vineyards are found in Penglai, a county north of the city’s downtown area. Penglai offers many activities including wine tasting, golfing, horseback riding and ancient temple tours.
Big city feel, small town prices – the downtown area has 2 million people; and skyscrapers and taxis fill the skies and streets, but the cost of lunch is merely 15 RMB.
